EXPERIMENT 1 EXPERIMENT 2 EXPERIMENT 3

RANDOM DEVICE

I wanted to create a device which did not rely on some kind of mathematical logic or random "computing" of numbers. I do not

drive, limit catching public transport, so more often than not walk. The idea of being "lead" to an unknown and / or random

location, I decided a way in which I could achieve this was to use my dog (Digsman), as my main device. A normal walk with Digsman would

involve me leading Digs to the location I desire to go, with Digs acting as the device, I would submit to his will and to wherever his

nose would lead us. With this as a starting point, I formulated a method in using the walk with Digsman to pinpoint a specific area for my

"random location". Is as follows:

(1.a) Feed Digsman in the morning and take him for a walk until he takes a shit. The walk should be recorded through I-phone app "Map my

walk". The "journey line" is mapped by the app from the start of the walk to last point of the walk (where the shit lays).

(1.b) Whilst walking Digs, collect printed material which I find on the ground

(2) Using the addresses from the collected found material, use these sites as a "pin" on the map surrounding / outside or inside the "journey

line and draw a line from these addresses to the site of the shit.

(3) Where these line cross the journey line, create a new pin.

(4) From these new pins, line each pin to all other new pins.

(5) Analyse the results.

WALKING THE DOG (Method 1.a)

Mapping the walk - The below images highlight the walk with dogs, using the "Map my walk" phone ap.

I thought it was interesting that Digs led us to areas we wouldn't normally venture. Highlighted in yellow is our normal walking destinations, scribbled in purple represents the general areas he led us.

  • This slideshow consists of a few random photos / screenshots from the walk with Digs

FOUND PRINTED MATERIAL (Method 1.b)

The following addresses are those collected from the printing material I gathered whistle walking Digs:

Liquorland - Shop 25, Surry Hills S/C, Cnr Cleveland St & Baptist

Legends Gym - 89 Anzac Pde, Kensington, NSW 2033

Asian King Restaurant - 121 King Street, Newtown

Maya Tandoori - 472 Cleveland St

Electric Velocity Cyclery - Shop 105 Regent Street Chippendale

Moore Park Gardens - Shops 2c/ 780 Bourke Street, Redfern East 2016

Cique Design Bar - 425 Bourke Street, Surry Hills, nsw 2010

Centennial Health Bar - The Entertainment Quarter Moore Park

*insert scans of material and crate slideshow.

FINDING THE SITE - (Methods 2 - 5)

Following the instructions of my method, the final lines from joining all the "pins" together, a distinctive "X" became apparent. The old "X

marks the spot" obviously came to mind, but inside the X a small rectangle was present covering 3 streets. It was then clear that this was

the final location my device had led me towards.

What struck me as a DEFINITE sign however, was that this precise location was located where I experienced a "moment" on the walk with

Digs. I thought this moment to be significant and captured it on film. Digsman, who is normally strong on the lead and never stops to rest,

came to this particular corner on the walk and stopped. He sat there for (at least for him), a very long time. I thought to myself at that time

that if he doesn't stop to shit during this walk, I would make this particular corner my "site". As it happened though, the "X marks the spot"

was also on this corner.
